I remember in the old days of Napster, (perhaps they still have it) when you were doing a search for a file, but certain files were limiting your search, you could put a (-) in front of a word, and it would disclude all files with that word.
For example, say you were looking for the song “What About Me.” by the band Moving Pictures. Well when you searched for it you would get tons of files listed for the band Rush and the song and album named “Moving Pictures“. So in the search window you could add a (-rush) and it would filter out all the files containing Rush and therefore greatly increasing your chances of finding that song.
It was a great feature for finding really obscure stuff. (By the way the song “What About Me” really sucks, I was just using this as an example. I liked it when it came out but I was young, naive and stupid. I hope my girlfriends kids can forgive themselves for the crap they listen to later in their lives.)
So now, sorry, I actually get to my point. Is there a way to use a web browser to specifically filter out specific key words. I know you have the stuff like net nanny, etc. to filter out Adult material, or the work related software that won’t allow you to use MSN Messenger or whatever.
But what I want to do is find a way to ensure that I never again see a web page that contains Britney Spears. I never again want to hear about O. J. Simpson. I can do without the latest on Anna Nicole Smith. Oh the joy to have not an inkling as to who has anything to do with American Idol. Could you imagine missing the entire Donald Trump and Rosie O’Donnell feud?
But I do actually want to know whats going on in the world. I want to know the things that are REAL news. But unfortunately, because stupid people just HAVE to know about inconsequential bullshit the news sites have to put the crap front and center on their sites so idiots will go there.
So is it possible to say create an add on for Firefox’s tool box that would simply allow you to click it and -Anna Nicole Smith, -Britney Spears, -American Idol and never see them again?
And by the way I am well aware that had you done that you wouldn’t be able to view this post, but I would be glad to take that one for the team.
